Neurologists are medical doctors who specialize in the study and treatment of nervous system disorders. Neurologists do not perform surgery. When surgery is required, this is usually done by a neurosurgeon. Of those who would go into medicine again, 86 percent said they would choose neurology. It takes several years to become a neurologist. To begin with, you will need a bachelor’s degree, or pre-med education, which takes 4 years. Next, you need 4 years of neurolgist school to get a medical degree. This can be a Doctor of Medicine, or M. After medical school, you will need to do an internship of 1 year, then at least 3 years in an accredited neurology residency program. Once this is completed, you can write the exam to become a certified neurologist. In some cases, you may be able to get a 4-year residency right out of medical school, in which case that counts as your internship.
