I’ve always been writing songs and performing music since I started learning guitar at around age 8. As many of you, I had dreams of being a ‘rock star’ and played in bands throughout my teens. I did have some small success. Got a few of my songs placed here and there, and performed at some cool venues. Over those 4 years I began working in marketing and sales, and studying psychology NLP if anyone’s familiar.

I live in Ireland, Dublin so I got a few options. I’m a smart guy so I’m probably going to end up with the points to go anywhere I want. I really love producing music in my spare time, its really amazing what you can do in it, but in terms of pursing a career in music professionally? I doubt it. People tell you to do what you want, to pick what you have a passion for but what if I dont make any money off music, what if I dont even get a proper job. I mean getting a degree like that doesn’t seem useful at all, its really centred on working in studios, on working in the music industry. I doubt that the job market is big over there and i doubt i’ll get a job anywhere else with a degree like that.
Welcome to Reddit,
WeAreTheMusicMakers WatMM is a subreddit for hobbyists, professional musicians, and enthusiasts to discuss music-related topics, ask questions and share useful information. Welcome and enjoy the community! The following rules are strictly enforced by the moderating team. Is it unrealistic to want to make a living off of music? My dream is to make money from my own music, but I know it’s not very likely. I’m going to college this coming year, and moving to LA next year. I’d be happy teaching music, or being an audio engineer, but is it realistic? Is it possible for me to go from soundcloud followers to something tangible? And if you’re willing to be happy with any level.. That’s the thing, there are music careers everywhere. From being a Grammy winner to writing tv jingles to being a school band director. If you really love music, you will find A career, even if it’s not the original one you hoped for, and you just have to be thankful for being involved with music. Of course it’s possible, just get you business head on! Branding, marketing and key demographics. Get on it! Educate yourself. For a start work out your 3 main target demographics. Mine are «Bass players», «psychonauts» and «the existentially alienated». So I make sure every bit of content that I put out ticks an interest box for each demo. Look at your best friends, why do they like you? What are your common interests? Health and fitness? Find the 3 things that are at the core of your closet relationships and then you have your demos. Then you involve them in your life, true fans care about YOU, you have to offer them a way to connect and build a relationship with you based on shared interests. Obviously there’s a lot more to it than this but I’m not writing an essay haha. Man honestly I’m half and half at the moment, I do a part time day job and then there’s multiple side revenue streams. So I do music for apps and corporate event stuff, last thing I did was «Jetpack baby dash» app wise and working on this «ants» thing with the same Dev at the mo.
